Safe lifting techniques
Most manual handling injuries come from lifting badly, not from lifting too much. The single most important habit is to lift from the power zone — the area between mid-thigh and mid-chest, kept close to your body. It’s where your arms and back are strongest, so the load stays off your spine.
Plan the lift. Check the load’s weight, your route and where it’s going before you touch it.
Stable base. Feet shoulder-width apart, one foot slightly forward for balance.
Bend your knees. Keep your back’s natural curve — never stoop over from the waist.
Get a secure grip. Hold the load with your whole hand, not just your fingertips.
Lift with your legs. Straighten your knees smoothly, keeping the load in the power zone, close to your body.
Move carefully. Don’t twist — turn with your feet, and set the load down with your knees, not your back.
If a load is too heavy, awkward or unstable to handle safely on your own, don’t risk it. Use a mechanical aid such as a trolley, sack truck or hoist, or arrange a team lift with one person giving clear instructions. Knowing when not to lift is part of doing the job safely.
Try a few sample questions
These are the style of multiple-choice questions you’ll answer in the final assessment. Tap an answer to see how you did.
1.Where should you carry a heavy box to protect your back?
2.What’s the first thing you should do before lifting a load?
3.How should you bend to pick a load up from the floor?
4.A load is too heavy and awkward to lift safely on your own. What should you do?
